Osage Chapter

    February 11, 1999                  Volume 9      Issue 2

Onondaga Service Project

Once again, the Osage Chapter has proven that through rain, sleet, or snow, it will get the job done!

On January 30, forty-plus Scouts and Scouters placed water bars and moved a section of a trail at Onondaga Cave State Park. Despite occasional rain spurts, the project was completed. While finishing the work, a heavy rain shower hit the area, giving the event a true Scouting finale to a well-done job.

The Chapter thanks everyone who helped, especially non-OA members whom also contributed valuable time and effort.

Osage Spring Camporee

The 1999 Osage District Spring Camporee will be held at Beaumont Scout Reservation on the weekend of April 30, May 1, and May 2. The theme for the Camporee is "Natural Disasters." This year, a selected adult and youth member will run each project, with all scenarios, supplies, and scoring guides supplied to them.

All events are geared towards Boy Scouts and Webelos, and their descriptions will not be included in the Camporee manual. It is up to Scouts to determine what skills are needed for each project, however, Boy Scout Handbooks are allowed for use at projects.

Manuals for the Spring Camporee will be at the April Roundtable. More details about the Camporee will be given at the next two Roundtable meetings and the Spring Conclave.

Vigil Honor

Robert Smith (444) and Corey Chapman (329) were nominated for the Vigil Honor at the 1998 Winter Fellowship Banquet. They will complete the Vigil Honor at the Spring Conclave in April, symbolizing their commitment to the Order of the Arrow and Boy Scouts.

OA Summer Camp

The first annual Order of the Arrow Summer Camp will be held at the S-F Scout Ranch August 8-12, 1999. This exciting camp will include Indian dancing, water-skiing, ceremonial team competitions, rock climbing, Native American seminars, mountain biking, ceremonial team site preparation, sailing, and ceremonial costume making. If that isn't enough, get this: The cost is only $85.00! Each participant will receive material to make a set of moccasins, a choker, and a shirt. Contact a Chapter Officer for more information.

What's Different

If you haven't noticed (which means you need to attend more Chapter meetings), the Drumbeat has been on an ongoing design-improvement project. This is to make it more visually appealing and provide more informative news.

One major change in this issue is the header, which now has an arrow, instead of an Indian. This change was made in sync with OA's new logo.

Question: Why did the Order of the Arrow change its logo?

Answer: To quote from the OA strategic plan, "We will adopt a new logo; one focused on the arrow rather than the Indian. The arrow is easily the most recognizable symbol that has its origin in our first ceremony. By taking the arrowhead from the arrow on the sash as our logo, we unify our image and strengthen the identity embodied in our name, the Order of the Arrow."

Nagel Horse Camp

The August 1-7, 1999, long-term horse program will be an adventure-filled experience. Program features include horseback riding, swimming, skeet shooting, overnight canoe/horseback trip, campfires, and much more. A horse show will be the grand finale. To be a part of this exciting program you must be 14 years of age by August 1, 1999. Cost is $115.00. The program will take place at Nagel Explorer Base, Beaumont Scout Reservation.
